Workshop on Food Composition Databases
Participants of the WP-3 training workshop on Food Composition Databases
From 16-27th of April 2012 the WP-3 training workshop on Food Composition Databases took place at the National Institute of Nutrition, in Ha Noi, Vietnam. This training was co-organised by Wageningen University and the National Institute of Nutrition within the framework of the European project SMILING ‘Sustainable Micronutrient Interventions to Control Deficiencies and Improve Nutritional Status and General Health in Asia”.
The main aim of the workshop was to:
• Build general capacity in the field of food composition databases
• Align procedures to select foods for quality assessment & update
• Align procedures for quality assessment and data checking of selected foods and nutrients
The course program was designed to provide basic background information about food composition databases and to enhance knowledge and insights into food composition to serve the objectives of WP3. Work forms used in the training course were: lectures, E-learning, dynamic group interactions, assignments and an excursion.
Participants of the workshop were representatives from the five target countries in the SMILING project (Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Laos and Cambodia) responsible for their national food composition database. Two persons from each SEA country were trained.
Three experts in the field of food composition databases facilitated the training course:
• Dr. Prapasri Puwastien from the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University, Thailand (SMILING partner MU)
• Dr Verena Nowak, FAO international consultant, Rome, Italy
• Ir. Paul Hulshof, Division of Human Nutrition, Wageningen University, The Netherlands (SMILING partner WU)
During the training workshop we discussed and practiced the procedure for quality assessment and update of the national Food Composition Databases as proposed by WU with both external facilitators and participants of the workshop. As a result a consensus document was produced about “selection of foods for data checking and quality assessment of national food composition tables in target countries” . This document is the starting point for each of the target countries in SMILING to assess the quality of food composition data and to perform the update of the national food composition database following standardized approaches and builds on pre-existing guidelines as designed within EuroFIR, INFOODS and ASEAN foods.
"SMILING for Action", Final dissemination event, 3rd April, Phnom-Penh, Cambodia
The final dissemination event will be organized Thursday 3rd of April 2014, at Sofitel Phnom-Penh, Cambodia. The five national roadmaps of priority interventions to prevent micronutrient deficiencies during the project will be presented to a large audience of stakeholders, policymakers, representatives of International organizations involved in nutrition policies implementation.
Publication on the project in "Food and Nutrition Bulletin"
The SMILING project was the topic of a publication in Food and Nutrition Bulletin , vol. 34, no. 2 (sup.), "The SMILING project: A North–South–South collaborative action to prevent micronutrient deficiencies in women and young children in Southeast Asia" Berger J. et al
SMILING outcomes at the Micronutrient Forum Conference
Two presentations at the Micronutrient Forum Global Conference (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, June 2014) will be about specically SMILING. Many researchers from the project will present outcomes related to the project.
