WP 2: Mapping of data on nutritional status and micronutrient interventions for best pratices
Description of work
Scientific evidence during the past few decades have been highlighting the importance of micronutrient malnutrition.
However lessons learned on strategies to improve micronutrient situation in developing countries include that success is often variable, and dependent on many factors. Globally, reviews on the significance and impact of key interventions have been dealt with extensively in the Lancet series on maternal and child nutrition (Lancet, 2008) and the Copenhagen consensus on the costs of micronutrient deficiencies and cost-effectiveness of interventions (Horton, 2008).
It is important that this knowledge and lessons be mapped and critically analyzed, in light of the contexts of participating SEA countries, to identify best practices or ways to effectively tackle micronutrient malnutrition in vulnerable groups.
Objectives
1. To conduct a State of the Art systematic review regarding:
- micronutrient needs of women of reproductive age and young children as defined internationally and in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand;
- impact of early life malnutrition on health in adulthood and development of chronic diseases in adulthood and functions in later life;
- research and intervention programs to control micronutrient deficiencies in these target groups;
- potentially effective novel intervention approaches to improve micronutrient status in women in reproductive age and young infants.
2. To compile an overview of existing data on nutritional status (both micronutrient and general) in women and young children in target SEA countries.
3. To compile information of countries-specific characteristics in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand that have to be known to propose relevant and adapted strategies.
4. To review country-specific interventions that have been implemented (past/current) in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand, to improve the micronutrient status of vulnerable population groups.
The results from Tasks 2.1 to 2.4 will allow identifying the best practices for micronutrient interventions in WP5
Tasks
Task 2.1. WP2 coordination workshop (lead UCPH with participation of IRD, DFPTQ, NMCHC, SEAMEO, NIOPH, VU, WU, MU).
Task 2.2. Reviewing existing scientific knowledge (lead UCPH, with contributions from DFPTQ, IRD, VU and WU)
Task 2.3. SEA country situation and country-specific features (lead DFPTQ with contributions from NMCHC, SEAMEO, NIOPH and MU)
Task 2.4. Map past/current interventions in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand (lead DFPTQ with contributions from NMCHC, SEAMEO, NIOPH and MU)
"SMILING for Action", Final dissemination event, 3rd April, Phnom-Penh, Cambodia
The final dissemination event will be organized Thursday 3rd of April 2014, at Sofitel Phnom-Penh, Cambodia. The five national roadmaps of priority interventions to prevent micronutrient deficiencies during the project will be presented to a large audience of stakeholders, policymakers, representatives of International organizations involved in nutrition policies implementation.
Publication on the project in "Food and Nutrition Bulletin"
The SMILING project was the topic of a publication in Food and Nutrition Bulletin , vol. 34, no. 2 (sup.), "The SMILING project: A North–South–South collaborative action to prevent micronutrient deficiencies in women and young children in Southeast Asia" Berger J. et al
SMILING outcomes at the Micronutrient Forum Conference
Two presentations at the Micronutrient Forum Global Conference (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, June 2014) will be about specically SMILING. Many researchers from the project will present outcomes related to the project.
